SAN DIEGO – A 92-year-old from North Carolina has become the oldest woman to finish a marathon.
The Associated Press reported that Harriette Thompson completed Sunday’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon in San Diego in seven hours, 24 minutes, 36 seconds.
This was the Charlotte woman’s 17th annual Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon. She said she was thrilled to finish.
Gladys Burrill held the previous record after completing the 2010 Honolulu Marathon. She was 92 years and 19 days old.
But Thompson is 92 years and 65 days old, beating the previous winner by about six weeks.
Thompson nearly matched her score from last year. Sadly, she said she couldn’t train as hard this year because she had to take care of her sick husband, who died in January.
Her time also set a record for being the fastest among any woman over 90. The run was 26 miles and 385 yards.
Thompson said she started running marathons in her 70s. She’s a classically trained pianist and said she likes to play “piano pieces” in her head as she jogs.
Thompson is also a cancer survivor who enjoys donating to cancer research. She credits her running for keeping her healthy.
