ASHEBORO, N.C. — A man with dozens of charges against him surrendered to police Friday evening after a standoff that lasted approximately four hours.

Jatwane Demetrius Cole, 21, is in the custody of Albemarle police following a standoff in Asheboro.

On Friday afternoon, Albemarle police notified Asheboro police that Cole might be in the city. Asheboro police were also advised he might be in possession of multiple weapons alleged to have been stolen over the past few days.

Albemarle and Asheboro police responded to 703 E. Presnell St. at about 1:30 p.m. to look for Cole. Upon arrival, Cole barricaded himself in the apartment.

Officers tried to chase Cole, but were denied entry, Asheboro police said. At that time Asheboro Police Department SWAT was called and the apartment was surrounded.

Hostage negotiators from Asheboro police, as well as the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, responded and attempted to start a dialogue with the suspect.

After approximately four hours, Cole exited the apartment and was arrested without incident.

According to WSOC, Albemarle police have at least 40 charges against Cole and there may be more as the investigation unfolds.

Cole is accused of breaking into at least 19 homes and stealing valuables in recent weeks. Albemarle police say Cole is believed to have stolen TVs, jewelry, guns, electronics, gaming systems and more.

Albemarle police said Cole was on probation and was wearing an ankle monitor, but cut it off, making it difficult for them locate him.

Police think Cole had help and didn’t commit all these break-ins alone, but are still investigating.

Anyone with information on Cole is asked to call Albemarle police at (704) 984-9500.
